Seven Things to Do in Paphos

We spent a week in the Paphos area on the west coast of Cyprus staying in three different 4 star hotels, Theo Sunset Bay Holiday Village, Crown Resorts Horizon and Capital Coast Resort in March 2011. Here are my tips for things to do in Paphos.

Walk Along the Coastal Path

You can head north on the coastal path starting at Paphos harbour.  Dusk is a good time to take a short stroll here to admire the sunset but I wouldn’t advise you to walk on the path after dark as it’s quite rough.

Enter the Tombs of the Kings

This Greek burial site was hewn out of solid rock around 3BC, probably not even for Kings but for aristocrats but hey Kings sound much more lofty. The site lies at the northern coastal fringes of Paphos.

Have a Coffee/Meal at Paphos Harbour

There’s a good selection of cafes and restaurants at Paphos Harbour. If you’re lucky, you may even catch a rising full moon reflected on the sea at dusk.

Swim at Coral Bay Beach

There’s a frequent bus service between Paphos and Coral Bay to the north. Coral Bay is beautiful sheltered beach with golden sand. We went swimming here a couple of times.

Visit Paphos Castle

Paphos Castle was first constructed in the 13th century and has been used by Byzantines, Venetians, Ottomans and British occupying forces.

Admire the colourful artwork at Paphos Airport

Just outside the entrance to Paphos Airport there are several metal sculptures. There’s plenty of outdoor seating and we ate sandwiches and drank the last of our water before going through security here, much more pleasant than sitting in the airport.

Marvel at the Roman Mosaics

These remarkably well preserved  Roman mosaics dating from the 2nd to the 5th century are must visit in Paphos.  Some of the mosaics adorned the floor of the Roman Governor’s residence.  Do visit early as it can get very hot under the roofing used to protect the mosaics from the sunlight. You’ll find the mosaics close to Paphos Harbour.

Aphrodite’s Rock, also known as Petra Tou Romiou, in Cyprus

Aprhodite’s Rock,  known as Petra Tou Romiou in Greek, which translated literally means Rock of the Greek, lies on the southern coast of the island of Cyprus.  It’s said to be the birthplace of Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love, beauty and sexuality. Unfortunately we were there on our last day in Cyprus and the showers near the beach were out of order, so we weren’t able to verify if swimming around the rock bestows you with eternal beauty.

Aphrodite’s Rock

The Rock is well sign-posted off the motorway between Paphos and Limassol. There’s a car park, with a small shop/cafe and a tunnel under the road for safe passage down to the beach and rock.

Me at Aphrodite’s Rock

I noticed the Petra Tou Romiou restaurant in an elevated position up from the main road and we drove up there for a coffee with a view. However the restaurant was a bit grotty and it was hard to appreciate the view with all the flies on the windows.

About three miles west of Aphrodite’s Rock is a car park with shady picnic benches, toilets, drinking water fountain and a path down to the beach.  There’s only one small sign at the entrance, so it’s easy to miss.

From that car park you can walk in either direction along the Petra Tou Romiou Nature Trail. I’d advise you to walk there either in the early part of the morning or wait until evening, as there’s no shade on the walk.

View from Petra Tou Romiou Nature Trail

When we were there is mid March there were lots of wild flowers along the nature trail.

A visit to Aphrodite’s Rock/Petra Tou Romiou is a great day trip from Paphos. Car hire is pretty cheap is Cyprus, we paid under £70 for a supermini for a week for two drivers and no insurance excess. We found that having our own transport made days out very flexible. Also our flight home didn’t leave Paphos Airport until evening, so were able to make the most of our last day with our visit to Aphrodite’s Rock.

Review of Capital Coast Resort, Paphos, Cyprus

My husband Demetrius and I stayed for 2 nights in mid March 2011 at the Capital Coast Resort in Paphos, Cyprus, booked through laterooms.com. It cost £70 a night for 2 guests in a one bedroom sea view apartment on half board. The hotel is situated on the outskirts of Paphos, close to the Tombs of the Kings.

Our apartment was furnished and fitted to a very high standard and even had two bathrooms. The kitchen had a washing machine, dishwasher, microwave and full cooker.

Living/kitchen area in our apartment at Capital Coast Resort

The double bed was very comfortable but there wasn’t enough wardrobe space.

Our bedroom in the Capital Coast Resort apartment

There was wired internet in the room and wifi in the lobby which cost 2 Euro per day, 5 Euro for 3 days and 10 Euro for a week. However the internet was down for several hours one evening and not restored until around 10.30 the next evening.

I had a very relaxing session in the sauna, steam room, jacuzzi and indoor pool (free of charge for guests) during which I had all the facilities to myself. The outdoor infinity pool is lovely. The hotels is next to the coast but it’s too rocky to go swimming there. The coastal path to Paphos passes in front of the hotel.

The indoor pool at Capital Coast Resort

The quality of the food at the breakfast and dinner buffets was very high but some of the dishes such as the baked fish were a bit bland. There’s not a great choice at the dinner buffet with 3 main courses.

There are a few restaurants and bars within walking distance of the resort and frequent buses into central Paphos.

I’d highly recommend the Capital Coast Resort as it offers superior accommodation at value for money prices. It’s ideal if you’re looking for a relaxing holiday.

Review of Crown Resorts Horizon Hotel, Coral Bay, Cyprus

My husband Demetrius and I stayed for 2 nights in mid March 2011 at the 4 star Crown Resorts Horizon Hotel in Coral Bay, north of Paphos on the island of Cyprus, booked through hotels4u. We paid £50 per night for two guests in a sea view room on half board.

Exterior of Crown Resorts Horizon

The lobby of the hotel has some interesting artwork and stained glass windows. There was free wifi with an excellent signal in the lobby. All the staff were very friendly, hard working and helpful.

Lobby at Crown Resorts Horizon Hotel

The first room that we were allocated had a very strong smell of stale cigarette smoke. When we went back down to reception to ask for another room the receptionist said that room was supposedly non smoking. The next room we were offered still smelt a bit of cigarette smoke.

Our room was good size with space for a small table and two chairs in the room. The balcony was pretty small but had an 180 degree panoramic sea view. The bathroom had very attractive tiling. The beds weren’t very comfortable and you could hear the springs creaking every time you moved.

Our room at Crown Resorts Horizon Hotel

The hotel grounds were large with a lot of grassed areas, a lagoon pool, a bowling green and a kids play area.

View of Crown Horizon Resorts grounds from our balcony

The food at the breakfast and dinner buffets was very good with some very tasty vegetarian main dishes for dinner such as moussaka and lasagne. The desserts were a bit foamy. The tables were far too close together and you felt like you were sitting at the same table as your neighbours.

It’s a ten minute walk down to the sheltered Coral Bay beach, where we went swimming twice. There’s a fair selection of bars and restaurants close to the hotel.

In summary the Crown Resorts Horizon Hotel is more like a three star hotel than a four star as soon, as you move away from the lobby. It’s quite good value for money but the rooms are let down by the beds and lingering cigarette odour. Although the food is very good, the dining experience is rather marred by the cramped layout of the restaurant. The hotel has the potential to offer guests a much better experience if they ensured that no smoking bedrooms are maintained as such, invested in some new beds and arranged the restaurant tables to give guests more space.

Review of Theo Sunset Bay Holiday Village, Paphos, Cyprus

My husband Demetrius and I stayed for 3 nights in mid March 2011 at the 4 star Theo Sunset Bay Holiday Village near Paphos on the west coast of Cyprus, booked through hotels4u. The price was £45 per night for two guests in a one bedroom sea view apartment on half board.

The pool at Theo Sunset Bay

The apartments were set in attractive gardens. Our apartment was the upper left in a block of four.

The exterior of our apartment at Theo Sunset Bay

Our one bed apartment was a good size with a very comfortable double bed.  The kitchen was well enough equipped with 2 gas rings, a microwave oven/grill, fridge, toaster and kettle. As we were on half board, we only used the kettle and fridge.

The interior of the apartments was a little bit drab with the brown curtains and bedspread and dark wood furniture. Some lighter, more colourful soft furnishings would really cheer up the apartment. We found that the wardrobe was too small.

Living area of our apartment at Theo Sunset Bay

It’s quite unusual to get a double bed as we often end up with two single beds pushed together on our travels.

Our bedroom at Theo Sunset Bay

We paid extra for a sea view apartment. The balcony was a good size with three chairs and a small table.

The free wifi in the lobby had a very good signal. As wifi in the room cost 5 Euro for 90 minutes, I decided to stick to the free provision in the lobby.

The breakfast buffet was very good with plenty of choice of cereal, yoghurts, eggs, bacon, fried vegetables, pancakes, cheese, cold meats, salads, home-made jams and bread. The food at the dinner buffet varied in quality with one evening’s offering very good, one OK and another with pretty ropey main courses of very fatty lamb stew and tough pork.  But most of the food was pretty tasty, especially a couple of the desserts; a fruit flan and a walnut gateau.

There’s a small sandy beach at Queen’s Bay, a five minute walk from the hotel where Demetrius went swimming one morning. There isn’t much to do in the surrounding area but the bus between Paphos and Coral Bay stops close to the hotel.

Queen’s Bay, the white buildings at top of cliff are part of Theo Sunset Bay

In summary, I’d recommend the Theo Sunset Bay Holiday Village as an excellent value for money option. But I’d classify it as a 3 star hotel and not 4 star. It was great to have the space and facilities of an apartment, even although we were on half board, as well as a sea view, at such a reasonable price. The free wifi in the lobby with a very good signal was a real bonus for me.

Planning Our Cyprus Holiday

My husband Demetrius and I took a one week holiday on the island of Cyprus in mid March 2011.  Our flights were courtesy of easyJet. As a thank you for me taking part in the easyJet 15 Hour Blogger Challenge, the airline offered return flights for me and a companion for any route on their network. So, we opted to fly to Cyprus from Edinburgh.

Coral Bay

Choosing our Hotel

I looked for Paphos hotels with sea view rooms, offering half board with verified guest ratings of at least 80% and free or reasonably priced internet access (at least in the lobby). I set a budget for £60 per night for two guests on half board.

I started the search for hotels in Paphos area on the HotelsCombined price comparison site. I managed to whittle it down to three 4 star Coral Bay hotels (north of Paphos town). I decided to stay for 2-3 nights at each of these three hotels, as I thought it would be interesting to compare them for quality of room, food, service and value for money. I then checked for the best prices for each of the hotels on these sites:

Moonlight at dusk in Paphos

Selected Hotels in Coral Bay

A one bedroom sea view apartment which scored an average of 86% in guest reviews. There’s  free wifi in the lobby.

A twin room with a sea view which scored an average of 88% in guest reviews. There’s free wifi in the lobby.

A one bedroom suite with sea view which scored an average of 84% in guest reviews A wired internet connection or wifi costs 2 Euro per day, 5 Euro for 3 days and 10 Euro for 7 days.

Total Cost

Therefore at a total cost of £375 for the 7 nights, I came in under budget at an average of around £54 a night.

Choosing our Hire Car

We picked up our supermini hire car at Paphos airport. I booked it through the car hire broker economycarhire.com for £53, as they include a 2nd driver free of charge and insurance excess as standard.

Our rental car, a Subaru Justy, at Paphos Airport

I liked the fact that the supplier Avis has a 24 hour service, some suppliers were only open until 20.00 and as our flight is due in at 18.00, I didn’t want to risk paying an out-of-hours fee of up to 20 Euro plus tax if our flight is delayed. I decided to pay an additional £10.50 to cover the standard inclusions such as damage to tyres and loss of keys. Therefore the total paid was £63.50.  You can read more about getting the best deal on car rental in my post, “Find the Best Low Cost Car Hire“.
