I’d been keen to visit Santander in northern Spain for ages. Ryanair made this possible, as they now fly from Edinburgh to Santander. Our flights in mid May 2013 cost £54 return including all fees and charges, taking only hand luggage and paying by debit card,

We stayed at the 4 star Hotel Silken Rio Santander which cost £51 a night for bed and breakfast in a double deluxe sea view room, booked through ebookers using a 15% discount code..This was a great deal, as I saw the room on other hotel booking sites for well over £500, sometimes as a non-refundable rate.

That was total of £232.50 per person for the flight and seven nights bed and breakfast in a sea view room in a four star hotel; excellent value for money.
The beaches around Santander were beautiful. My husband took his wetsuit so he could go swimming, as the water was still pretty cool.

You can walk for miles along Santander prom. If you prefer to move a bit faster, there are lots of bicycle hire points dotted around the city.
