Exterior of AC Palacio Universal Vigo
A really strong smell of cigarette smoke hit me as soon as I opened the door to my room. I went straight back down to reception to request a smoke free room. I was then allocated a room on the fifth (top) floor. The room was in the roof so had one sloping wall with two Velux windows. I couldn’t get one of the blinds to open but didn’t say anything until I checked out, as I really didn’t want to either have someone up to fix it or be allocated yet another room. I often think that many guests don’t bother to report faults in rooms, but staff should also do regular checks to ensure everything is in working order.

Although the hotel was in a central position, most external noise disappeared when I shut the window.
I found the bed to be comfortable and slept very well. I loved the bathroom, it was spacious with a glass sink unit and large bath. There was a good supply of toiletries and the towels were very soft. The room had air conditioning. There was a safe in the room which could hold my netbook.

There was a free soft drink mini-bar in the room. However, you could only access free WiFi by going to the lobby, it cost 10 Euro a day to get online in your room. I was very grateful for the free WiFi in the lobby and the signal was generally pretty good. However it would’ve been much more convenient and quieter to be able to work in my room. One evening there were some very loud guests and one morning a very insistent beggar came into the lobby harassing everyone. In my opinion this is not acceptable in a four star hotel. I reported the incident to reception but they really should be more vigilant.

I had dinner one evening at the hotel. Dinner wasn’t served in the restaurant, which only appeared to be used for breakfast, but in the lobby. There were only a few main courses on the menu but my chicken with vegetables was delicious. The hotel didn’t serve lunch.

The breakfast was reasonable but not great for a four star hotel. The quality of the food on the breakfast buffet was good, but the selection a bit limited. I thought it was excellent that breakfast was served until 11am on weekdays and noon at the weekend. I wish all hotels would offer guests this flexibility.

In summary, I really liked my room at AC Palacio Universal Vigo. It’s surprising how many hotels can’t get the basics of a comfortable bed and decent bathroom right. I wish that all hotels offered such long breakfast serving hours; I’m fed up of having to rush down for breakfast by 9am. I suggest that the hotel asks guests if they wish a non-smoking room on check in, implements a zero tolerance policy on hustlers coming into the lobby and stops charging guests for in-room WiFi.
