Seven Things to Do in Paphos

We spent a week in the Paphos area on the west coast of Cyprus staying in three different 4 star hotels, Theo Sunset Bay Holiday Village, Crown Resorts Horizon and Capital Coast Resort in March 2011. Here are my tips for things to do in Paphos.

Walk Along the Coastal Path

You can head north on the coastal path starting at Paphos harbour.  Dusk is a good time to take a short stroll here to admire the sunset but I wouldn’t advise you to walk on the path after dark as it’s quite rough.

Enter the Tombs of the Kings

This Greek burial site was hewn out of solid rock around 3BC, probably not even for Kings but for aristocrats but hey Kings sound much more lofty. The site lies at the northern coastal fringes of Paphos.

Have a Coffee/Meal at Paphos Harbour

There’s a good selection of cafes and restaurants at Paphos Harbour. If you’re lucky, you may even catch a rising full moon reflected on the sea at dusk.

Swim at Coral Bay Beach

There’s a frequent bus service between Paphos and Coral Bay to the north. Coral Bay is beautiful sheltered beach with golden sand. We went swimming here a couple of times.

Visit Paphos Castle

Paphos Castle was first constructed in the 13th century and has been used by Byzantines, Venetians, Ottomans and British occupying forces.

Admire the colourful artwork at Paphos Airport

Just outside the entrance to Paphos Airport there are several metal sculptures. There’s plenty of outdoor seating and we ate sandwiches and drank the last of our water before going through security here, much more pleasant than sitting in the airport.

Marvel at the Roman Mosaics

These remarkably well preserved  Roman mosaics dating from the 2nd to the 5th century are must visit in Paphos.  Some of the mosaics adorned the floor of the Roman Governor’s residence.  Do visit early as it can get very hot under the roofing used to protect the mosaics from the sunlight. You’ll find the mosaics close to Paphos Harbour.
