Review of Crown Resorts Horizon Hotel, Coral Bay, Cyprus

My husband Demetrius and I stayed for 2 nights in mid March 2011 at the 4 star Crown Resorts Horizon Hotel in Coral Bay, north of Paphos on the island of Cyprus, booked through hotels4u. We paid £50 per night for two guests in a sea view room on half board.

The lobby of the hotel has some interesting artwork and stained glass windows. There was free wifi with an excellent signal in the lobby. All the staff were very friendly, hard working and helpful.

The first room that we were allocated had a very strong smell of stale cigarette smoke. When we went back down to reception to ask for another room the receptionist said that room was supposedly non smoking. The next room we were offered still smelt a bit of cigarette smoke.

Our room was good size with space for a small table and two chairs in the room. The balcony was pretty small but had an 180 degree panoramic sea view. The bathroom had very attractive tiling. The beds weren’t very comfortable and you could hear the springs creaking every time you moved.

The hotel grounds were large with a lot of grassed areas, a lagoon pool, a bowling green and a kids play area.

The food at the breakfast and dinner buffets was very good with some very tasty vegetarian main dishes for dinner such as moussaka and lasagne. The desserts were a bit foamy. The tables were far too close together and you felt like you were sitting at the same table as your neighbours.

It’s a ten minute walk down to the sheltered Coral Bay beach, where we went swimming twice. There’s a fair selection of bars and restaurants close to the hotel.

In summary the Crown Resorts Horizon Hotel is more like a three star hotel than a four star as soon, as you move away from the lobby. It’s quite good value for money but the rooms are let down by the beds and lingering cigarette odour. Although the food is very good, the dining experience is rather marred by the cramped layout of the restaurant. The hotel has the potential to offer guests a much better experience if they ensured that no smoking bedrooms are maintained as such, invested in some new beds and arranged the restaurant tables to give guests more space.
