Walking around Berwick upon Tweed on a Wintry November Afternoon

Winter has started early in Berwick upon Tweed in the north eastern corner of England. The first snow fell on the evening of Wednesday 24 November 2010. These photos were taken during a walk around Berwick on the afternoon of Sunday 27th November 2010.

The bad weather has delayed the official launch of the Royal Border Bridge Illuminations, due to take place on Saturday 27 November but cancelled due to the snow.

The resident swans at Berwick are unusually friendly and very low key (they communicate by quiet grunts/barks and are silent in flight) They have been associated with the town for centuries, were traditionally loved by the locals and even hand-fed by the fishermen. In the winter there are about 2-3 dozen swanning around the estuary, but in the summer many more swans migrate to Berwick and we sometimes see a couple of hundred (not all mute) moving gently with the tide on the river from our back garden.

Hello from Berwick, Pennsylvania, USA. No snow here yet but it will arrive soon. Your photos of the snow are beautiful. I have been to Berwick upon Tweed 6 times, several with the exchange, know lots of people ( Especially Jim and Ann Smith ), played pennywhistle with “Heads on the Block” and “Pennydot”. I love your Town !!!!!
