Just south of Koblenz, Bacharach is one of many towns located along the Rhine River in Germany. The city has an extraordinary history, with the first mention of it dating back to the 7th century. The town has been a major transport city of wine and timber and has been occupied many times.
While the focus of Bacharach sightseeing may be on Stahleck Castle and the Gothic ruins of the Wernerkapelle church, it’s a great place for just exploring, walking, hiking, or relaxing. Train tracks run along the outside walls of the town making it a convenient stop for those passing through.
Along with the castle and church, the town offers other Bacharach attractions such as a number of wall towers, an old postal station and marketplace, a couple of churches, and remnants of an old Roman road. For the rest of your time, take a cruise along the Rhine enjoying a number of towns along the river.
Because of its location, many towns have a number of castles that are worth exploring. This makes Bacharach a nice, quiet base for leisurely exploring the history of these towns and castle ruins along the Rhine. A couple of great castles worth exploring are located in St Goar and Oberwesel.
For a unique hotel experience, stay in the Hotel Kranenturm built as part of the town wall. There’s a great restaurant located in the hotel and it’s location is perfect with some great views of the Rhine River. However, it’s also located right next to the train tracks so be aware that there may be some noise as well.
If you are exploring Germany, relax on the Rhine, enjoy a river cruise and many of the castles located along the river. Bacharach is a great town to relax, use as a base for exploring, or just experiencing a casual stroll through romantic Germany.
