Cardiff’s Taff Trail

Written by Andy Hayes

I’ve got a great Europe travel tip for you during your next visit to Cardiff, the Welsh capital: the Taff Trail. I actually found out about this from an EALC reader, Renato of RunAbroad.com, who suggested Karen visit the Taff trail during her Cardiff Travel Tips and Tweets last year. I’d like to also suggest the Taff Trail for you – in fact, I’m telling you, it is a must-see during your next Cardiff visit.

Cardiffs Taff Trail

The trail actually starts just around the corner from Cardiff Bay (or should I say, Mermaid Quay), a hot spot in Cardiff. You can actually walk for hours and hours, but here are a few highlights (walking away from the sea starting in the bay):

  • Millennium Stadium:  this is a huge attraction right in the centre of Cardiff, and the best views of it, frankly, are from the trail – just see the above!
  • Bute Park:  this is the city’s green lung, just next to the castle; the trail runs alongside the park for quite some time.
  • Potcanna Fields: if Bute Park wasn’t enough, the greenery extends further to Potcanna Fields; many tourists know about the park, but the fields are the local’s domain.  If it’s sunny, this is the place to be to relax and put your feet in the grass.  Beautiful place.
  • Llandaff Cathedral:  This is a wonderful cathedral, and one of the oldest religious sights in all of Europe!  The inner nave is very unique – you must see it.  (Take a map – the turn off for the cathedral isn’t signposted.)

I was lucky and had nice weather during my stay, but the Trail is well covered in most spots so it is still enjoyable even with a spot of rain.  So, check out the Taff trail when you’re next in Cardiff – you’ll love it.
