You need a emissions-control windscreen sticker on your car when driving through a low emission zone in Germany. Some cities like Berlin, Cologne and Hanover need this sticker if you are driving through the city.

I also recommend researching road signs in advance. Some are very different, country by country.

@ Krissi: Thanks for your comment on this. We are planning a trip to Germany next month and the ANWB told us to get the travel sticker.
Indeed before starting out, its better to prepare a plan where you can avoid the toll taxes on road. If it can be done, it should be done.
