Explore the Channel Island of Jersey’s history

Written by Karen Bryan

There are three great Jersey attractions where you can explore this Channel Island’s history.

Occupation Tapestry Gallery

The Occupation Tapestry Gallery is home to the twelve tapestries made by islanders to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Liberation after WW2.  The tapestries depict life during the 1940-1945 of German occupation of the Channel Islands.

The tapestries are really beautifully made with very vivid colours.

Jersey War Tunnels

The Jersey War Tunnels,  one of the most popular Jersey attractions,  brings to life what it was like to live under German occupation.  It’s quite chilling to try to answer the question posed “How would you react during occupation?” and imagine the repercussions after an occupation ends.

The Garden of Reflection has many plaques giving facts such as the average height for a 14 year old Jersey boy decreased by 6 centimetres during the Occupation, due to lack of proper nutrition.

From June to September 2010 you can go to the Flicks at Jersey War Tunnels a twice monthly screening of classic movies and vintage shorts in the entrance to the War tunnels.  Tickets cost £10 and include a welcome drink, canapes at the interval and admission to the tunnels.

Jersey Museum & Art Gallery

At Jersey Museum & Art Gallery you can find out about the history of the island from neolithic times.  I enjoyed watching the old movie clips about the island in the small cinema.  There’s a Marilyn Monroe exhibition at Jersey Museum until 30 September 2010.

So if you want to explore Jersey’s history these three Jersey attractions will give a good insight.  If you’re visiting several Jersey attractions it may be worth purchasing a Jersey Pass, prices start at £32 for a two day pass.  For a small island it’s amazing how many things there are to do in Jersey.

My Jersey trip was sponsored by bmibaby.
