Review of Salvo’s Italian Restaurant Leeds

Written by Karen Bryan

I was a guest at Salvo’s Italian restaurant in Leeds for lunch with Darren Cronian of My Life in Leeds and Rachel McAlley, Salvo’s PR consultant, in April 2010.  The restaurant is in the Headingley district of Leeds, a couple of miles north of the city centre. Salvo’s was recently named as the best Italian neighbourhood restaurant in the UK by Gordon Ramsay’s F Word.  Salvo’s has been run by the Dammone family for 34 years, the founder Salvatore’s two sons, John and Gip, now run the restaurant.

Below are photos of our selection from the menu. There’s a Light Lunch menu which costs £9.95 for 2 courses or you can choose from the a la carte menu.

Norma pizza with aubergines and sun blush tomatoes

My Sicilian Mushroom starter was wonderful.  I enjoyed it much more than the Norma pizza, which I found disappointing.  The flavour of the sunblush tomatoes was too strong and salty for my taste, whilst the other ingredients such as the aubergines appeared to have very little flavour.  As the pizza was priced at £9.75 on the a la carte menu, it’d be better value to go for the two course Light Lunch for virtually the same price, which did also have a pizza option.

Next door to the restaurant is the Salumeria, a delicatessen and cafe.  The Caffe Latte there was one of the best I’ve ever had, nice and hot (too many lattes are lukewarm).

Darren Cronian of My Life in Leeds at Savlo’s Salumeria

Salvo’s has a very pleasant, relaxed atmosphere and the Light Lunch menu has a good choice of dishes with quality ingredients, at reasonable prices.  There is some outdoor seating but it’s too close to a busy crossroads for my liking.  If I were staying at the city centre on a Leeds short break, I’m not sure if I’d make a special journey out to Headingley to eat at Salvo’s, especially as you can’t book a table in the evening and I’ve heard that there could be a wait of up to 2 hours to get a table on a busy night.
