Why I Fly Lufthansa

Written by Andy Hayes

As you know, I’m a little sick of being charged for every-little-thing when flying.

Why I Fly Lufthansa

That’s why one of my Europe travel tips is to fly Lufthansa.  Being based in Edinburgh, that means connecting in Frankfurt most of the time, but I’m OK with that rather than dealing with wet trousers because I didn’t have a one pound coin on my flight. Other reasons why I prefer Lufthansa:

  • Best in class rewards programme. I love Miles and More, but even better I love the Star Alliance. With miles you get access to good value for money rewards on airlines like Singapore, Air New Zealand, and of course Lufthansa.
  • Very good performance records. I fly Lufthansa all the time and have few problems. But when I do have problems, it’s always their problem to fix – they’re always very accommodating and do their best to make sure the inevitable problem is made as hassle-free as possible.
  • Decent Aircraft. While not perfect, I always find Lufthansa aircraft clean and in good working order. Considering the low cost carriers have newer planes, “legacy carriers” (do we still say that?) have to work a bit harder. Lufthansa does their bit.
  • Decent In Class Service. The in class service on Lufthansa within Europe is leaps and bounds above the competition. Snacks, food, and drink are served without the need for large banknotes.
  • Friendly Service. Lufthansa is known for rather brusque service, and perhaps it’s my German heritage, but I find it very good. They always smile and they do try to do the right thing.

I’m sure everyone will lunge with their Lufthansa horror stories, but for me, they are a carrier of choice. Check them out next time you’re doing some Europe travel planning: they aren’t as expensive as you think!

  1. I LOVE Lufthansa. I fly them every chance I get! I hope they stay the way they are and don’t start cutting anything.

  2. Andy, we fly once with Lufthansa on 2nd leg of Edinburgh to Rome via Frankfurt. I didn’t like food on Lufthansa, too much wurst and much worse Frankfurt airport was awful, no seats and filthy toilets.

I agree wholeheartedly with your comments on Lufthansa, for mostly the same reasons. They have always been my preferred air carrier since my first flights with them back in the summer of 1981. Although lately I don’t get to Europe much, I do like to fly with LH when the opportunity arises. Sometimes I have had to fly others on the trans-Atlantic runs (British Airways, Air Canada, Zoom Airlines, CP Air) solely because of price or schedule availability.
