Free York Attractions: York Art Gallery

York is a wonderful city for a UK short break. One of my top Europe travel tips is to visit the York Art Gallery, a free York attraction.

Unfortunately it wasn’t permitted to take photos in the Special Exhibition “100 Years of Gifts” a collection of British Art during the 20th century. It was interesting for me to see a set of four photos of the Baths and Spa at the Gellert Hotel in Budapest which Amanda has written about on the blog. I thought that Sarah Lucas’ “Sex Baby”, a photo where lemons portrayed pert breasts and the bottom half of a hanging chicken the females’ legs was a very imaginative take on females as sex objects.

I loved the Anonymous Rose painted mirror piece at the bottom of the stairwell.

The Minster is one of the best known York attractions but local artist Russell Platt’s painting shows it in a different light.

York Art Gallery has a very popular cafe on the ground floor. If you’re visiting the city I strongly recommend that you visit this free York attraction. Are there any other great free York attractions that you’ve enjoyed?

My stay in York was sponsored by Visit York.
