Walking Girona’s city walls in Catalonia, Spain

On of the activities which I most enjoy in the Catalan city of Girona in north east Spain is walking along the city walls.

There are several towers you can climb to gain even more elevation and get wonderful views over the city and the surrounding mountains.

One of the easiest points at which to access the Girona city walls is to turn left when facing the city’s Art Museum. This path will take you behind the cathedral and into some pretty gardens where you can get up on the walls.

It’s funny how some visitor activities like cycling around the town walls of Lucca in Tuscany, Italy are the first thing that springs to people’s minds when you mention Lucca. However if you mention Girona to most people they’ll probably look blank. I think that walking Girona’s city walls is a top attraction which should feature on the itinerary for visitors to this lovely Catalan city.

Have you walked along Girona’s city walls? Would you rate it highly as a visitor experience?

I really like Girona and think that it makes an ideal short break destination as Ryanair use it as one of their Barcelona airports. To find the best rates on hotels in Girona use the HotelsCombined metasearch.

  1. I’ve walked the walls with my kids and it was a nice experience. Have you visited the Volcanoes in Olot? Another great place to shoot videos.

  2. Steve – no unfortunately I haven’t been to the volcanoes at Olot although I have driven around Catalonia visiting Cadaques, Roses. Banyoles and Besalu.

  3. [...] had the 8 euro lunch at the baubar in Placa Catedral in Girona to fortify myself before my walk around the city walls in December 2009. It’s a very interesting location on the ground floor of the Girona School [...]
