Cycling around the town walls in Lucca, Tuscany

Written by Karen Bryan

When you mention the Tuscan town of Lucca most people immediately conjure up the image of cycling around the town walls. I was in Lucca from 29 November to 1 December 2009 and cycling the walls was one of my planned activities, especially as our accommodation host, the Hotel Ilaria & Residenza dell’Alba offered free bike hire to guests. On our first morning we chose our bikes and set out, only be seeking shelter after ten minutes when the heavens opened. The rain continued all day and it was still raining the next morning. However by our hotel checkout time of noon the clouds were clearing and the hotel kindly agreed to lend us their bikes although were were no longer officially guests.

Well we had three rounds of the walls and by the final circuit, the sun was shining. It’s fairly flat and with no vehicular traffic apart from a police car, it’s an easy cycle with great views.

So if you’re in Lucca do get on your bike. There are plenty of cycle hire shops where a one hour hire costs 2,5 euro.

  1. Way to go, Karen! Looks like you took to two wheels again, just fine. And no tumbling off while videoing the trip! :-) Lisa

  2. lisa – I’m so glad that in the end I manage to cycle Lucca’s town walls. My husband took the videos. I had planned to try to take some footage as I cycled around but the batteries in the Flip conked out, myabe just as well, as one handed cycling could have ended in disaster as I’m rather accident prone.
