Day Trips from Stockholm – Uppsala Cathedral

Written by Marcus Cederstrom

Uppsala Domkyrka, the 13th century cathedral, is the tallest church in Scandinavia.  Riding in to Uppsala on the train from Stockholm, the cathedral, as well as Uppsala Castle, can be seen in the distant.  The spires make for an imposing view on the horizon and even more so as you approach Uppsala.

It is easy to find your way from the train station to the church.  Rising above everything in town, the spires act as a beacon for the hundreds of thousands of tourists who visit the church each year.  Despite the numbers, the church very seldom seems crowded.

Inside are interred some of Sweden’s most notable historical figures including the biologist Carl von Linné, the philosopher Emanuel Swedenborg, Gustav Vasa, as well as a relic from Saint Bridget of Sweden.

The church itself is a beautiful work of architecture that has undergone several renovations since being built in the 1200s.  Be sure to hike up to Uppsala Castle to get a view of the church from above.
