Philip - thanks for your comment, like Rhiannon, Durham is the only cathedral on Andy's list which I visited and I thought it was beautiful. I have been to Lincoln Cathedral too.

Heather - yes I noticed the recurring religious theme this week, quite a coincidence.

Rhiannon - Thanks for the links to your favourite off-beat European cathedrals.

I've only been to Durham Cathedral out of your five - and it would have been high on my list too. It was always one of the places I never minded taking tourists to ( you know, there are other places where you do think " oh dear , not again ").

My other votes would go to the Oude Kerk in Delft http://www.oudekerk-delft.nl/eng/kerkgebouw/index.html
because I have a soft spot for those soaring white-washed Dutch Cathedrals and St Magnus Cathedral in Orkney - a real gem and great when used for concerts during the St Magnus Festival - http://www.stmagnus.org/index.html

I unhesitatingly agree with Bill Bryson, Durham is best! My number 2 is Lincoln which is beautiful, then Lichfield which is charming.
