5 Overlooked European Capitals: Ankara, Bern, Warsaw, Riga & Cardiff
Written by Andy Hayes
I’m always one for a good city break weekend, as I love to check out the vibe and atmosphere of foreign cities. I especially love capital culture. Here are five European capitals that are often overlooked (in some cases because folk don’t even know they are capitals!)

Ankara, Turkey
Many just assume that the bustling Asia-meets-Europe city of Istanbul is Turkey’s capital, but it’s actually Ankara. The second largest city, Ankara has many fantastic sites for architecture lovers and many archaeological sites – two favourties being the Anıtkabir mausoleum and the Kocatepe mosque. You’ll also find loads of fresh food; I never turn down a Turkish breakfast followed by coffee.
Bern, Switzerland
Ok, so perhaps Bern isn’t as picture-postcard perfection as Lucerne. But with far fewer tourists, it is a real Swiss gem. Busy shopping arcades, gorgeous city parks, and a hilly countryside that offers fabulous views anywhere, what’s not to like. Climb Gurten Hill, buy some handmade crafts, walk along the banks of the Aare river.
Warsaw, Poland
I’ll be the first to admit that I *love* Krakow. But Warsaw isn’t so bad either. The many sites (including a lot of WWII history) can be found in the city centre making exploration easy and effortless. But don’t miss spending a day out in Kampinos Forest, a gorgeous little spot that is one of Europe’s oldest forests.
Riga, Latvia
Riga is one of the up-and-coming Baltic capitals; with a car-free old town you can easily stroll and admire the architecture, from medieval to Art Nouveau. It’s easy to get to the sea coast via train, or just admire it from the view atop St. Peter’s church. (And just because of the name alone, check out the Naughty Squirrels hostel, who also do great tours.)
Cardiff, Wales
Now, we’re not going to get into a huff of the definition of capital – the UK kind-of-sort-of has four capitals, and Cardiff is an often overlooked one. The waterfront area (Cardiff Bay) is really experiencing a boom and there’s tons to see and do, or you can just relax with a pint if that strikes your fancy. Visit the City Hall and Cardiff Castle, then take a walk along the River Taff in Bute Park.

[...] Andy quite rightly recently mentioned, there’s a lot that’s worth seeing in Warsaw, and one place I found particularly moving [...]
[...] This city is a short trip from the UK and worthy of a weekend break. Hoever it is still often overlooked in the city break [...]
