I asked for tips on what to do and se on the Newquay stop of the Summer 09 UK Blogging Tour on the blog and on Twitter. Below are the tips I received, so if you’re planning a visit to Newquay you can get some local insider advice on what to do and see in Newquay.
Great Western Beach, Newquay
Ken McMahon of Look Around Cornwall advises that if you want to sample Jamie Oliver’s restaurant Fifteen at Watergate Bay to go for one of their breakfasts – it’s cheaper than lunch or dinner, but stil excellent, and you don’t have to book, it’s first come first served. On the beach front, Ken suggests that If you’re looking for a more secluded beach, try Bedruthan Steps, or head south to Crantock. For another great beach in Newquy with a great cafe/restaurant and an adventure centre (zipwiring abseiling, kitesurfing etc) try Lusty Glaze.

Gemma Ford of the Bedruthen Steps Hotel has an idea to make your journey from the airport to Newquay much more interesting. You could pop into the Ocean Spa to have a massage or a soak in the hydropool, over looking the stunning Mawgan Porth Beach to relax after your journey. The scenic journey back to Newquay takes you past Jamie Oliver’s Fifteen at Watergate Bay. You’ll be back in Newquay just in time to enjoy the nightlife – starting with a Cornish cider at the Red Lion pub!
Watergate Bay, Newquay
Julian thinks visitors to Newquay should go along the coastal walk from Pentire Head, through Fistral Beach and past the harbour into town. Ignore the few hundred yards in the centre of town which us locals call “Little Ibiza†this time of year. It’s here you’ll find the young crowds you see on the TV when Newquay is getting yet another negative media bashing! Bless ‘em! They’re doing nothing I didn’t do at that age! You can walk it all the way to Watergate Bay, as close as you can get to the cliff-edge – don’t worry, it’s safe. Watergate Bay is where Jamie Oliver’s 15 restaurant is but there’s also a great pub called the Phoenix which does good food and beer!
The best pub in Newquay is my mate’s pub; it’s called Leadbelly’s, which is in the main street opposite the rather grand Victoria Hotel. There are no posers or lager louts but you’ll find great ales and live music!
