Video Interview: Stephen Davies of the Penderyn Welsh Whisky Distillery

Written by Karen Bryan

During the Cardiff leg of the Summer 09 UK Blogging Tour, I spoke to Stephen Davies, MD of the Penderyn Welsh Whisky Distillery. Penderyn is the only whisky distillery in Wales and one of the smallest in the world, producing one cask of single malt whisky a day. The Distillery opened in 2004 and is located on the edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park.

Penderyn have extended their product range to include Merlyn Liquer, Brecon Vodka and Brecon Gin.

The Penderyn collection

There are guided tours of the distillery which cost £5 for adults and £3.50 for students or pensioners, which includes a tasting of two Penderyn products.
Money saving tip – if you register online before visiting, two people can get in free of charge.

Unfortunately as I don’t drink alchohol I can’t comment of the products, but the Merlyn Whisky Liquer certainly seemed to be getting the thumbs up from the other members of the guided tour.

Have you tried Penderyn whisky or any of their other spirits or liquers, how would you rate them?

  1. Good, interesting blog. I enjoy Penderyn very much from time to time. The herbal addition is, I understand, what marks out Welsh whiskey from the others. This and its intrinsic quality and top class marketing should give it a global niche market.

Apparently, the original industry was driven out in Wales by 18th century religious revivals, just like music and dancing at an ‘official’ level. It is also rumoured that Welsh whiskey is the source of Jack Daniels – a Pembrokeshire name – and another US brand.

You’ve reminded me I must go on the guided tour!

  2. Syd – thanks for your comment and it’s always good to hear that readers find the Europe a la Carte Blog interesting. As I mentioned in the post I never drink alcohol, so the tasting part of the Penderyn guided tour was wasted on me.

So Jack Daniels may have some Welsh ancestry?
