Best Day Trips from Cardiff: Brecon Beacons National Park

Written by Karen Bryan

I spent a few hours in Brecon Beacons National Park during the Cardiff leg of the Summer 09 UK Blogging Tour. We had lunch at the Visitor Centre Tearoom and even mananged to sit outside to eat (quite a feat this so called Summer). I had the chicken pie with potatoes, carrots and red cabbage, which was very good, the pie contained only lean chicken breast and the veg was just right, slightly al dente. Most main courses cost £6 – £7 which is good value for the quality of food and the location.

After lunch I attempted a walk up a slight slope to take some panoramic photos and video footage. Now I say attempted as although I had on cross trainers it was so wet in some places that I was sinking into the ground. I’d have probably needed wellies to stay dry as I reckon the mud could have risen about the height of hill walking boots. However I thought I’m not letting a bit of mud get the better of me, so below is my video.

As we were driving through the Park on our way to the Penderyn Welsh Whisky Distillery, we spotted three wild ponies, two adults and one foal. By the time I got the camera lens open they’d already started to head away.

I really enjoyed my visit to the Brecon Beacons National Park and wish I’d had more time to spend there and that I’d taken my wellies. Have you been to the park, what would you recommend doing there?
