The South Tynedale Railway runs from Alston to Kirkhaugh in Cumbria through the beautiful South Tyne valley. Alston lies around thiry miles south west of Newcastle upon Tyne. The trains are operated by volunteers.
There’s a free car park at Alston station with toilets and a cafe but these facilties are only open on days when trains operate. It’s best to check in advance if steam trains are running on the day on which you plan to visit.
We didn’t go on the steam train but there’s a footpath adjacent to the railway line along which we had a lovely walk. Have you ridden on the South Tynedale Railway steam train?

Hi karen .. that looks interesting .. I just don’t fancy the snow – especially as the sun has just appeared in the last day or two. I didn’t know they had a steam railway up there .. I must get up there one day.
Thanks for the post … and I see you’ve got Ravenglass there on another post – I must have a look ..
Hilary – there’s no snow in Alston now,
a real gem for the steam train buffs – I know a few :-)
clive – so you’re not a steam train buff yourself?
