The sea organ, Zadar, Croatia

Written by Karen Bryan

There’s an amazing sea organ on the Zadar promenade in Croatia. The “music” is created by the sea water pushing air into the thirty five tubes of varying lengths. The tubes are located beneath sea level and contain organ pipes.

The sounds are emitted from openings along the steps. The sounds vary according to the wind and tide.

I think that the sea organ is a simple yet brilliant concept. The sounds produced can be quite eerie and evidently sometimes disturb the sleep of local residents. I like public art installations which unusual are accessible to all.

Have you visited the Zadar sea organ, what did you make of it?

  1. Haven’t been here but it seems like such a great idea that it should be done elsewhere too! Will definitely include it on my next Croatian jaunt.

  2. I love this. I love environmental musical instruments.
