Slovakia’s Cerveny Kamen chateau

Written by Amanda Kendle

I’ve got a Slovak friend from Bratislava visiting me at the moment, and when I complained to her there were still so many places in Slovakia I wanted to go back and see, she reminded me that she has never been to Cerveny Kamen, “And you’ve been there twice!” Which is true, but somehow I’d still forgotten about this gem of a day trip from Bratislava to see this magnificent 13th century chateau.

In fact, Cerveny Kamen translates to “Red Rock” and I have to admit I was a little disappointed to discover the castle itself wasn’t red. Just the same, it’s a huge looming building with several rooms housing a museum with exhibitions including furniture and weapons from the lifetime of the chateau. There’s other stuff to do on site too – like visit the falcons or see the falcon show three times a day.

Unfortunately the official Cerveny Kamen website is only in Slovak at the moment but you might still gleen some useful info from it – for example the fact that entrance to the castle grounds costs less than 1 Euro, and a ticket into the museum is about 4 Euros. Cerveny Kamen is close to the town of Modra, north-east of Bratislava, and you can get there by bus from Bratislava or Trnava.

  1. how many of us travel half the world and never see some of the things vitually on our doorstep?

Perhaps one (?) of the upsides of children is many more day trips to local places with local people (well maybe not the last).
