Tkalciceva Ulica: Unwinding in Zagreb

Written by neha

Every evening the people of Zagreb snake past the main square and make their way to Tkalciceva Ulica (Street). This cobblestone pedestrian street is a vivid example of Zagreb’s cafe culture and is a popular haunt for after-work parties and weekend get-togethers.

Tkalciceva Ulica: Unwinding in Zagreb

Tkalciceva Ulica

Tkalca, as it is locally known, is one of Zagreb’s oldest streets. Even today its nineteenth century residents, elegant Baroque villas, stand on either side. Once homes of the rich, they now double up as cafes, serving hot pizzas, pitchers of beer and sparkling wines, and quirky galleries and boutiques. The atmosphere is just right -there is laughter in the air, along with smoke rings and the ringing church bells, and the drinks come cheap. Just find a comfortable seat and sink in; there is no better way to soak in the local culture.

In the summer, tables spill out onto the sidewalk and stand under corporate sponsored umbrellas; bright summer patterns match the pastel architecture; and conversation floats as freely as the drinks. In the winter, hot wine can be enjoyed indoors, and though the laughter is a little muted, wrapped in layers of wool, the atmosphere is still the same.

Tkalca offers a number of options -from chic soirees, to bohemian fares, to simply sharing a slice with friends. One my favourite spots is the Oliver Twist pub, a relaxed and fun place, it embodies the spirit of this street.

If you want more culture, walk across this winding road and explore the history along it –old buildings, bronze statues and crumbling sun dials, all offer a glimpse to the city’s past. Or spend your time browsing the galleries and indulge in a bit of retail therapy (Croatian coral jewellery is a great option, if you’re interested).

While there is a lot to do here, there is but one way to sign off –with a delicious cup of kava; this is, after all, the Croatian way!
