Colourful art and crooked floors at KunstHausWien
Written by Amanda Kendle
Vienna is one of my favourite cities, because it’s the kind of place where you just turn a corner and stumble into another piece of cultural history – maybe musical, or artistic, or something else. My favourite art spot in Vienna is the KunstHausWien. The name literally means “Art House Vienna”, but it’s actually a gallery that houses a lot of the work of Friedensreich Hundertwasser.

Hundertwasser is that quirky Austrian artist and architect who obviously didn’t like straight lines. Even within the gallery, the floor is uneven, so watch your step. His work is colourful and fascinating, plus he’s got a real environmental bent. The gallery also includes travelling exhibitions – for example, from April to July 2009, it will house an exhibition of graphic works by Picasso. The entry fee is usually 9 Euros but you can pay half this if you go on Monday – for 4.50 it’s definitely worth the visit.
For a double dose of culture, combine this with the Haus der Musik and you’ll be covering two sides of Vienna in a day – although you might have an inspiration overload at the end of it.

Hundertwasser belongs to my favourite Austrian architects. I can recommend two other of his masterpieces – first is a resthaus near the highway and the second one is a church – can you imagine a church by Hundertwasser? It is just great masterpiece – any classic at all, even the pavements in the surroundings are crooked and grooved!
Friedensreich Hundertwasser is an amazing artist — so glad this gallery is getting noticed!
As fellow Vienna afficionado I concur. Also note that the Kunsthaus has the most extensive collection of Thonet bent wood cafe chairs I know of (and they serve great coffee).
