Maribor Slovenia, Hit the Wine Roads or Hit the Slopes and More!
Written by Jason GreenMaribor is the second largest city in Slovenia and the city and the surrounding areas are packed with things to do, especially if you are a lover of wine and wine roads and winter and active sports. The city lies on the river Drava at the meeting point of the Pohorje Mountain, the Drava Valley, the Drava Plain, and the Kozjak and Slovenske gorice hill ranges. Maribor is set in a beautiful location with its historic streets, medieval remains, gorgeous city parks, a castle, a cathedral and one of the largest and oldest wine cellars in all of Europe.
Maribor houses the famous Old Vine House, which houses the oldest wine vine in the world. The wine roads in the Maribor area that should not be missed are the Maribor wine-tourist road, Podpohorska wine-tourist road, Upper Slovenske gorice wine-tourist road, and The Trail of Archduke Johann from Graz to Maribor. Farms for tourists and wine shops on each of the three roads are a great place to visit or stay over on a trip to Maribor. They are also a great place just to relax and enjoy a glass of vino in beautiful surroundings just outside the city. At the wine roads there are many places to sit and relax with a glass of excellent vintage wine. Also in the city and suburb restaurants, inns and pubs you can find many of the wines that are featured on the wineries on the roads.
There is so much more that the wine roads in and around Maribor, such as cultural sites like the Cathedral with viewing tower, Synagogue, Maribor Castle with the Regional Museum, Slovene National Theatre in Maribor, and the Art Gallery Maribor. There are many great outdoor activities to take part in just outside Maribor such as skiing, Adrenaline Park, hiking, cycling and bridle paths on Pohorje.
Minutes from Maribor is the skiing area of Mariborsko Pohorje, which has 220 hectares of slopes and is the biggest skiing area in Slovenia. Mariborsko Pohorje is great for beginner skiers and intermediate skiers while advanced skiers will still enjoy a good workout and why not try night skiing, which is a local favorite.
If you are into an action packed vacation then Maribor is for you, as you can find go-kart racing, caving, white water rafting, kayaking, rock climbing, and even skydiving.
There are great natural parks such as Pohorje primeval forest, peat moor with lakes (Lovrenška, Črno, Ribniško), Veliki and Mali Šumik waterfalls, City Park, Botanical Garden University of Maribor – Pivola, and the Botanical Garden TAL 2000. These places of natural beauty are a great place to go on a picnic, and I would suggest picking up a bottle of wine and some delights from the many city bakeries and sit and soak up all the surrounding sights.
There are tons of restaurants in the city and many serve both national Slovenian cuisine and international cuisine. There are many cafes, pubs, and small restaurants located right on the river and they are a great place to enjoy some food or drink and watch the town go by. If you are feeling lucky there are also several casinos, where you may run into Lady Luck and she may even pay for your vacation!
There are many accommodation options from grand and luxurious hotels to quaint apartments. For the best deal you may want to check out private apartment accommodations, as there are many located inside and in the surrounding Maribor area.

For one reason or another I’ve never quite made it to Maribor despite visiting Slovenia regularly for the last 9 years. But, having read your article, I’ll be going next time I’m in that wonderful country.
I’ve been to the Šumik waterfalls on Pohorje which I thought were superb – in a beautiful, unspoilt location deep in the heart of primeval forest.
Not too far away from Maribor and easy to get to is Ptuj. Situated also on the banks of the River Drava, it is one of my favourite Slovenian towns. Ptuj has a wonderful medieval centre and is overlooked by a hilltop castle.
Thanks for posting. I’ll give the casino a miss but drinking a coffee in Maribor, sitting beside the Drava, is now in my travel plans.
David – thanks for your comment. Well I haven’t even made it to Slovenia (apart from a quick drive through on way from Venice to Istria in Croatia. Hope you enjoy Maribor.
