Our Own Place in the Sun – (1) The idea
Written by Karen BryanWe’re thinking about getting Our Own Place in the Sun”, not to move away from the UK permanently but as a bolt hole away from the British Winter. We like living in the UK during the Spring, Summer and Autumn but thought it would be great to escape from the long, rather dismal British Winters.
Corcovado Beach, Costa Rica
The plan is if we’ll mainly stay at our own place in the sun during the Winter months, that we’ll be able to let out the accommodation to holiday makers during the rest of the year. The revenue from these lets should cover our costs, so we’d aim to break even.
Although somewhere like Costa Rica in Central America sounds very appealing and reasonably priced for property, it would be expensive to get there and very far from family. We may visit a holiday home more often for shorter periods while I’m still working, that option just wouldn’t be feasible with a long haul destination. So we decided to investigate possibilities nearer home in Europe.
The most obvious choices for European Winter sun are places like The Canaries, Madeira and Cyprus but you rarely find cheap flights from the UK to these destinations. We also thought that it would be great to have the option to drive to our bolt hole if we were intending to stay there for a couple of months in the future. Also we’re not sun worshippers, it doesn’t need to be hot enough to lie in the sun.
We decided to look at locations in southern mainland Europe that can be reached by several low cost airlines. Southern Spain looks like a good bet with plenty of cheap low season flights both with Ryanair and Easyjet, even from our two nearest airports of Newcastle and Edinburgh. Also the south of Spain is about as far south as you can get on mainland Europe.
Carbrera (Andalucía- Almeria)
I’ve visited the Granada area and Majorca in January and there was some rain but it was generally sunny and warm enough during the day to walk around without a jacket. We’re not anticipating wall to wall warm sunshine but reckon it’ll be a lot more pleasant outside than in the UK.
