Peacock butterfly photos
Written by Karen BryanUpdate 30 August 2010 – I wanted to compare the peacock butterfly photos taken recently with the Sony NEX-5 camera that I’m testing. It’s not a direct comparison as the background, the garden fence, is different in the earlier photos.
Original Post – I’ve read recently that the UK butterfly population is in decline due to the recent wet Summers interfering with their breeding season. However we seem to be bucking this trend in our garden in Berwick upon Tweed in north east England, where we have seen more butterflies than ever this Summer.
We have regularly been spotting 4 Peacock butterflies on one particular flowering shrub.
It’s been wonderful to see these butterflies in our own back yard, as Peacock butterflies are considered to be one of the most beautiful species of butterfly in the world.

Nice flowers as well, Karen =)
Andy, my husband is the gardener of the family but he’s not sure of the name of the shrub that the butterflies seem to like so much.
Buddleia is the name of the plant above. They also love lavender, wild clover and rotten fruit.
I’m breeding some Peacock caterpillars that I took from a huge nettle patch near me. I wish I could take good pictures of the different stages but alas my camera isn’t very good.
Sarah – thanks for your comment and for telling me the name of our flowering plant. The buddleia is about to flower, but it’s in a bit of a sorry state after being somewhat flattened by wind on Friday, so hopefully the Peacock Butterflies will appear soon.
It is early morning on the 4th January. It has been freezing cold today. I went upstairs to bed late and found ahuge peacock butterfly
on the lamp ( which was on) in my bedroom. It is very much wide awake ! It must have hibernated in my house and woken up ( maybe because I moved some furniture and disturbed it. What a shock! I’ve left my camera in the car. This is a peacock butterfly on Jan. 4th 2010. A freezing cold day !
Thanks for sharing your tale of your unusual Winter find with us, I haven’t seen any peacock butterflies for months.
Have found a peacock butterfly awake on the inside of my bedroom curtains today- 17th January, Cardiff! It has fed from sugared water and ripe banana and is resting on the windowsill. Is it too early to let it out?
I found a peacock butterfly on the curtains in my dining room last week. I took it into my bedroom, since it’s the warmest place and have since let it occupy the windowsill as I’ve been told it’s too cold to let it out, with more snow on the way. Hopefully it will warm up in a few weeks, until then it seems to be fine with sugary water and a plant to sit on.

I live in cornwall and have seen relatively few peacock butterflies on my buddleia this summer, only one or two in fact, but have a huge increase in red admiral numbers up to 6 at a time! small tortoiseshells are now appearing in good numbers too,but alas no peacocks.
Russ – We’ve seen plenty of peacock butterflies in the last few days, when the sun has been out, now the buddleia is in full flower. My husband said he saw one Red Admiral yesterday.
I saw a butterfly in my garden today.I am 77 this month never been in to butterflies before.I had to go to the computer to identify it.
It was a Peacock butterfly, the most beautiful thing I have ever seen.
Phil – I didn’t know one butterfly from another either until I took the original photos two years ago, so I was online to ID the peacock butterflies too. They are really beautiful.
