Why read Guardian travel when Europe a la Carte offers better coverage?
Written by Karen Bryan
I came upon an article from the Guardian entitled, “Top 10 Edinburgh Days Out“, when I was browsing recent submissions on Travel off the Cuff, showcasing some ideas for a day trip distraction for weary cultured out festival goers. I’d written about 6 out of the 10 days trips, North Berwick, Incholm, Linlithgow, Gullane, Beecraigs and Musselburgh in this blog with more information and photos than in the Guardian.
North Berwick – The Guardian article only mentions that Seabird Centre, but you can also climb Berwick Law for great panoramic views, visit Tantallon Castle and have lunch at the Grange Restaurant.
Incholm – an island in the Forth Estuary reached from South Queensferry.
Linlithgow – with it’s palace and the nearby Beeraigs Country Park

Grazing deer at Beecraigs Country Park
Gullane – a village on the East Lothian coast which you pass through on the way to North Berwick. I’d recommend a visit to the Aberlady Bay Local Nature Reserve.
Musselburgh – which lies just east of Edinburgh has a promenade, the historic Newhailes House and the beautiful gardens at Inveresk.
I’d like to add a couple of my own suggestions for days out from Edinburgh, the historic villages of Culross, Ceres and Falkland in Fife for which you’d need a car or a trip to Stirling, accessible by public transport.

Hi Karen,
Point taken.
So you don’t believe the big news outfits are doing a good job:-)
Happy Hotelier, it’s unlikely that one site or blog is going to offer readers all the information useful for all their travels. I just think that travellers looking for tips. ideas and inspiration should look beyond the well known sources such as Guardian travel.
Personally I think the media are struggling for content but Karen’s spot on, don’t assume because the Guardian says visit a,b, and c that they are the best spots in that destination.
Darren, well if the media are struggling for travel content, they can take me on as a travel writer.
Actually, whenever I came across pieces in The Guardian about destinations that I know, they’re normally poorly researched, full of factual mistakes and sometimes just wrong, wrong, wrong. I used to email the travel editor over there and point it out, but now I just don’t bother. He did invite me to start pitching ideas though! LOL! ;)
Same here – I never run out of anything to write about :-)
@Anna, that’s interesting that you’ve noticed numerous errors in Guardian travel articles. My beef was that a location which had several possibilities only had one mentioned, like they couldn’t be bothered to add more than one activity and link per location. You should pitch ideas to them though,
@Andy, I think that the Europe a la Carte blogging team should have European travel section in the online Guardian.
Agreed – shall we draft them a proposal? =)
