Europe a la Carte wrote about staycations in June 2007

Everywhere I turn there are articles about staycations, it’s seems to be the in theme for travel this Summer due to the credit crunch and increased fuel, food and mortgage costs. I wrote an post called “7 reasons to have a holiday in your own home” on 30 June 2007 but didn’t come up with the catchy staycations label.
Here are my 7 reasons:
1 Save money, especially true in the high season
2 Not waste 2 days out of 8 travelling e.g. hanging round in airports or stuck in traffic jams on the motorway.
3 Enjoy home comforts instead of having of crammed together in a hotel bedroom or tiny apartment.
4 Reduce your carbon footprint by not flying or driving long distances.
5 Take time to appreciate what is in your own backyard.
6 You enjoy being at home, so why dash off when you have time off to relax.
7 Hopefully you will get some good weather, even in the UK, during a week in the Summer?
For me it’s not just about saving money it’s about my free time being more relaxing without long journeys. I am lucky that we live in a beautiful coastal town, Berwick upon Tweed, in North Northumberland in the north east of England, three miles from the border with Scotland, so l can easily visit two of my favourite areas in Scotland, the Scottish Borders and East Lothian.
Are you taking any staycations this year?

Interestingly, the concept of a staycation has long had a description in German. Here they call it a “Holiday in Balconia”, and a large number of people do spend the summer in the sun of their balconies and the comfort of their homes without the stress of travel and the pressure of having a good time.
