Sjoerd - that's awful, so you lost 20 euro at the petrol pump and had to pay the car hire company's refuelling charge? That's ridiculous that the petrol pump takes money when it's empty, the pump should just shut down when it's empty.

The moral seems to be to buy refuel you hire car before you get to Pisa airport, hopefully not too far away from the airport, so that the fuel gauge still shows full.

For me it’s a kind of an Italian stitch up.
I put €20,-. So did a lot of other people who had to return the car. There was no fuel left. The pump was empty. At Hertz they told me that it’s the same on every Sunday and Monday.
Now I try to complain but there is no number on the shop or in the internet.

Laura, I assumed it was an Italian debit card but my Nationwide debit card is a Visa Debit card so I didn't even attempt to use it. I checked on my Nationwide card now and it doesn't mention the Cirrus network.

Bancomat is essentially Italian for ATM, although not all ATM cards are accepted, most are, like those in the Cirrus network.
