Christine, I know it's not always possible to travel off peak e.g. if you work as a teacher or have kids in school. Personally I prefer off peak in southern Europe as it's not hot as I'm inclined to burn easily and prefer cooler weather for exploring.

Self catering accommodation can be cheaper than hotels and if you can cook there that can also save you cash but in some cases you can only book for 7 day lets running for Saturday to Saturday and you may only want to stay a couple of days and weekend flights are generally more expensive.

Nomadic Matt, yes couchsurfing and the hospitality club do combine budget travel with meeting locals. I just don't know if I'd want to sleep over at a "strangers" house or offer hospitality in our home as i do value my privacy especially if I'm travelling with my husband. However for a single traveller for whom the alternative could be be sleeping in a dorm at a hostel ( not something I would do) it could be ideal.

I prefer the idea of acting as a guide to other travellers or having them over for a meal than the accommodation aspect.

Great advice... I should have taken the first one-- travel out of season, but the timing worked out to be in Spain this summer, so what can you do?

For accommodations, we are actually renting an apartment, which turned out to be much cheaper than any hotels we could find (in Madrid) and we have full amenities (It's furnished, with a kitchen, laundry, Internet etc).
