How much influence do travel agents have?

MPs are urging travel agents to encourage UK residents to holiday on home shores. I’m not too sure how realistic this is. Many peoples idea of a holiday still entails a flight to somewhere sunny and that’s been the core of many travel agents businesses. I think travel agents are already under enormous pressure to compete on price with online travel agents and the last thing on their minds is spending time and effort changing customers attitudes and boosting UK tourism.
Looking at some recent statistics such as, 64% of domestic leisure hotel bookings are now being made online, makes you wonder if MPs appreciate the decline in the influence of travel agents. Perhaps MPs could take domestic holidays themselves and start a blog about their experiences to entice the population to stay in the UK by reading about the MPs trips?
Here I am proposing a Best of Britain off the beaten track tour for my blog, which will be excellent publicity for the UK. I could meet MPs in their constituencies and they could show me round their local area.

I totally agree that more people should consider the UK for holidays and short breaks. There is so much to do and see in the UK, even on your own doorstep. I’ve spent quite a bit of time in my native Scotland researching for my destination guides and have been amazed by places that I thought I know once I scratched below the surface.
