I don't crave 5 star luxury either but I do like my basic creature comforts. I suppose the description "off the beaten track" can be applied at different levels. I really mean somewhere that's not overrun with hordes of tourist, not necessarily up a mountain. Couldn't agree more that Gatlinburg is the antithesis of off-the-beaten-track. But I'm a firm believer in the possibility of finding something to discover in the tackiest and most over-run of places.
