Finding the best car hire deal.

Now the best deal for car hire is not necessarily the cheapest. I’ve blogged about the hazards such as excesses of several hundred pounds which you could incur if you damage the vehicle or it’s stolen.

Fancy this as a hire car by lambigred

I searched for a hire car for our one week pickage holiday in Fuerteventura in November. Generally I’m very happy with Auto Europe and they quoted a price of £111 for an VW Fox economy car with air conditioning, with no excess to pay. However it didn’t say that the price included an additional driver, as we share the driving. I emailed to enquire about this and was informed that there would be a extra charge of £5 per per day for a second driver. I thought that this was too much, so started to look for other quotes. I noticed that Economy Cars advertised that an additional driver was free of charge as well as no insurance excess to pay. The quote from them was £118, saving £28 on the £146 from Auto Europe (including the additional driver fee).

The cheapest quote from Ecomony Cars was £100 for a slightly smaller car, a Citroen C2 with no air conditioning, from a supplier who didn’t have an office in the terminal, a rep would meet you in the arrivals lounge. I just didn’t like the idea of the possibility of standing in the arrivals hall for ages waiting for a rep so went for the Corsa size vehicle with air conditioning and an office in the airport.

I noticed that if you cancel your booking with Ecomony Cars more than 48 hours after you make the booking, there is a charge of £15, whereas with Auto Europe there’s no charge as long as you give 24 hours notice before pick up.

It is complicated if there had only been one driver I’d have been cheaper going for the Auto Europe quote. So the advice is take some time to compare quotes and find the best deal for you.

It is always best to compare with a couple of hire companies before actually fixing the deal, a direct contact with the company proves really worth as they dont take time and the pain to get the websites updated with the current prices.
