Exhibition of Prestonpans Pottery 3 - 29 September 2007

Welcome to my blog, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

I visited the Exhibition of Prestonpans Pottery at St Andrew’s Church in Ayres Wynd (opposite the library) this afternoon. Opening hours are Monday - Friday 11am - 3pm and Saturday 10am - 2pm

Prestonpans had several potteries due to plentiful local availability of clay and coal which were prolific in production from the 18th century.

I thought that the exhibition was really interesting. There were several fisherwife figurines displayed in a cabinet decorated to look like the beach with shells, driftwood and seaweed. I thought that the penny bank created in the shape of a creel, topped with a skull crammed with fish was funny. There were novelty whisky flasks, one modelled on a lady’s boot and another was a tattie (potato). My favourite was a cheese dish adorned with birds and bulrushes.

I was fortunate to meet the Curator, Graeme Cruickshank. His aim was to showcase local pottery mainly sourced from the local community in response to a roadshow in March. Mr Cruickshank is offering group sessions on Thursday evenings at 7.30pm. If you’d like to attend you should phone 0131 229 0735.
