New Calton Cemetery, Edinburgh

Written by Karen Bryan

New Calton Cemetery offers wonderful views in Edinburgh of the old town, the Scottish Parliament, Holyrood Palace and Arthur’s Seat. It is located just off Regent Road which can be reached if you keep walking straight at the St James Centre end of Princes Street.

The cemetery opened in 1817. It’s a pity that the watchtower, built to discourage grave robbers, appears to have been burned and is now fenced off. The cemetery itself is very interesting as several of the burial sites are more like small stone built rooms rather than merely headstones.
