Spittal Beach, Berwick upon Tweed

Welcome to my blog, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

Spittal village lies a couple of miles from Berwick upon Tweed, on the southern side of Tweed estuary. The location was ideal for a medieval leper hospital to keep the patients away from the town. Spittal was a popular day out by train for the Victorians to enjoy the coast and the restorative waters of the spa well.

The chimney stack of a former manure factory is a reminder of the village’s industrial past. You can see the stack in the right of the photo. The cream building to the left of the photo is a cafe and amusement arcade. There’s a promenade along the beach.

I’m fortunate the Spittal is my local beach and I enjoy going for walks there.
