7 Reasons to have a Summer holiday in your own home

Written by Karen Bryan

Is it possible or desirable to have a holiday while staying at home? I suppose that partly depends on where you live. This year we’ll be spending some of our holiday time at home in Berwick upon Tweed in north east England.

The 3 bridges of Berwick upon Tweed

I decided to compile some of the advantages of taking a Summer holiday at home.

1 Save money, especially true in the high season

2 Not waste 2 days out of 8 travelling e.g. hanging round in airports or stuck in traffic jams on the motorway.

3 Enjoy home comforts instead of having of crammed together in a hotel bedroom or tiny apartment.

4 Reduce your carbon footprint by not flying or driving long distances.

5 Take time to appreciate what is in your own backyard.

6 You enjoy being at home, so why dash off when you have time off to relax.

7 Hopefully you will get some good weather, even in the UK, during a week in the Summer?

What do you think?

  1. In the past, when we moved to other cities, we acted the tourists and visited all kinds of interesting sites. Our new neighbors often commented that they had never been to some of those places. It occurred to me that I hadn’t seen several sites in my own hometown.

I think everyone should take some time and tour the place they live. Get a travel guide for your city and explore the area. Sometimes people put it off, thinking they can do it anytime, but then they never do.

Because of that, and for all the great reasons listed above, I agree that sometimes it is good to stay home for your holiday.

  2. I’m sure it’s true that many people intend to visit their local area and never get around to it. As you say in theory they can do it anytime.

I do appreciate that in the UK everyone has at least 4 weeks paid holiday from work, I believe in North America paid holiday entitlement is not so generous.
