Europe’s Hidden Treasures

by Heather Holman

Most tourists come to Europe to see the big cities and attractions, missing the most beautiful and unique places. These one of a kind villages should be full of tourists and marked huge on the map, but luckily for us they are Europe’s Hidden Treasures.

Lacock Village, England

14 Miles outside of the luxurious city of Bath lies a village that dates back to the 13th Century. It remains largely unchanged over the centuries and has many limewashed, half-timbered and stone houses - because of this Lacock has played the part of medieval villages in such movies as Pride & Prejudice, Harry Potter, Moll Flanders, Emma, Cromm Cruac, The Pretender and episodes of Robin of Sherwood. The Lacock Abbey is a must see.

Eze Village, France

Beyond the touristy towns of the French Rivera hides the Village of Eze. This quaint town dates back to 2000 BC and the ruins of the neolithic era can still be seen in and around town. The views from the mountain top town rival that of its famous neighbors, Nice and Cannes.

Rocamadour, France

Well worth the 3 hour drive from Bordeaux, the village of Rocamadour is carved straight out of the mountain side. The must see is the Catherdral of Rocamadour or Notre Dame Rocamador whom thousands make the pilgrimage up the hundreds of stairs to see the Black Madonna each year.

Hohenschwangau, Bavaria

This beautiful village stands between two of the greatest castles ever built. Hohenschwangau Castle and Neuschwanstein Castle both built by the Fairy Tale King, King Ludwig. Itís said Walt Disney based Disneyland off of Neuschwanstein.

Kutna Hora, Czech Republic

Kutna Hora is a great medieval town off the beaten path. The absolute must see in Czech is the Sedlec Ossuary otherwise known as the Bone Church. During the plague the church had ran out of room for burial in the traditional sense so in order to have the dead at peace in holy ground, they used the bones for decoration.
