Restaurant Review – Tiger Coast, North Berwick

Written by Karen Bryan

I ate at the Tiger Coast indian restaurant, 114 High St, North Berwick in East Lothian today. I wanted to try the all day Sunday buffet which cost £9 for an adult.

Restaurant Review Tiger Coast, North Berwick

The buffet choice consisted of vegetable pakora and various salads. For the main course there were four meat curry dishes, chicken tikka, a mixed vegetable dish, bombay potatoes and rice. I thought that the chicken tikka consisted of very tender and aromatically flavoured meat and mixed vegetable dish was a complimentary blend in terms of flavour and texture. The pakora was not very fresh. The lamb curry dish didn’t taste much like lamb, maybe mutton and the sauce in the chicken korma was rather watery and the chicken overcooked.

Overall I did enjoy my meal. The restaurant is a pleasant environment, its walls adorned with bright murals. For £9 it is fairly good value although no coffee or dessert is included in the price.

Myself and my son ate at Tiger Coast Indian restaurant yesterday. The meal (lamb tika massala) was one of the worst indian meals (of which we have had many) that we have ever had. There was only a few pieces of lamb and it was so tough that we could hardly chew it, and the sauce was like water. As the waiters were so busy having a loud conversation in their own language, we had no opportunity to complain. We were so hungry that we just ate the food – which although not totally unedible – was most unenjoyable for the above reasons. On paying the bill, I told the head waiter (? owner) what we had felt regarding the meal, and instead of being apologetic, he was totally obnocious!!
I had not asked for a discount, and nor did I wish one. I explained that my reason for telling him of our disappointment about the meal was for the benefit of other customers. However, he continued to be defensive and unapologetic. The Tiger Coast is the only Indian Restaurant in North Berwick, and therefore perhaps feel that they can be complacent. Perhaps the fact that only one other table was occupied speaks volumes!
They most certainly would not get our custom again.

  2. Dot – thanks for your comment. I’m sorry to hear that you didn’t enjoy your meal at the Tiger Coast Indian Restaurant in North Berwick. I haven’t eaten there since I wrote the review a couple of years ago. I suppose at least with the buffet there are several dishes from which to choose and some may be better than others.

  3. Hi Karen, Just came across your blog looking for the Tiger Coast phone number as I’m about to order a take away.

A word of defence for the Tiger Coast – we always find the staff very friendly and courteous, and the food is delicious.

  4. Nick – enjoy that takeaway, I’m feeling a bit jealous as I’ve just had soup for my dinner.

  5. Have recently had a couple of carry outs! Food has been ok but not what was ordered! Have not offered to change any meals wrongly taken down!
Have spent my time waiting for correct order and then charged for changes! Have been buying carry outs from here for last 4 years! Will not be buying any more! High prices extremely poor service in my opinion!
