Durness, Scottish Highlands
Written by Karen Bryan
Durness lies on the north west coast of Scotland. My visit to Durness was pretty brief, only a few hours on a rainy evening. The beach there is really beautiful. The sand is golden with a hint of peach (I sound like an interior decorator) with many large rocks strewn around the shoreline. This area has some of the oldest rocks and landforms on the planet. Just up from the beach, outside the Tourist Information Office, there is a collection of local rocks with name and age labels.

One of the main attractions is Smoo Cave the largest coastline cave in the UK. There’s a large entrance and it’s floodlit inside. There’s a dramatic waterfall in the inner chamber. It’s free to enter and appears to be open all hours although if you visit during the day you can pay few pounds to have an boat trip.

Great shots. I fell in love with the region during my recent visit and definitely have to go back. I saw the cave waterfall in it’s angry glory running at full steam. Unfortunately, due to the flood danger and power of the falls the boat wasn’t running. The good news is, that just means I’ll have to go back on a quiet day and see the more pristine/tranquil side of Smoo Cave!
Definitely an incredible coastline. Thanks for sharing!
Alex – Durness is a magical place but pretty time consuming to reach even when you live in the UK. Sounds like we both need to return to take the boat trip in Smoo Cave.
