A top chef declared that he would rather eat a Big Mac than most meals served on airlines even in business class!

What do you think? Well I reckon a Big Mac would be more filling and more recently cooked. I am inclined to take my own food with me when I fly. I like to have some fruit with me and a homemade sandwich, or even crackers and cheese, is tastier than the average economy class meal.

I have a friend who is having the displeasure of working for a food factory dedicated to making up and cooking food for airlines.

The stories I’ve been told has put me off airline food somewhat, and I bite with great trepidation on any airline meal. I also know the horrors of Macdonalds and I too would prefer the BigMac and shorten my life by 5minutes in the process.

I’ve also a friend who works for an airline, first class, and the airline is still providing choices but deliberately coming short on stocks on the more expensive items - effectively the choice is a perceived choice.

My last flight, this week, I’ve had cause to complain as it was inedible and not fully cooked - awaiting for a reply from the airline!

I assune it’s all about cost cutting for the airlines, if they serve thousands of meals a day and save a few pence on each meal, it will add up over the year. I’m not sure if it’s a sensible policy, perhaps if people book airline tickets mainly on price this is inevitable. If an airline has a good reputation for food partly by spending more on good quality ingredients, will they get more bookings?

I don’t think it matters too much for short haul and infrequent fliers, but if one airline has a better reputation over another airline for food on longer journeys, people can be swayed.

A certain airline used to have a reputation for quality and were slightly more expensive than rivals - people were still using them - now it is cost cutting, people may be more inclined not to be so loyal anymore, and winding their customers up - economy up through to the flatbed class.
