Flybe expands

Alex Robertson Textor of EuroCheapo.com looks at the options for Flybe. Will UK budget airline Flybe soon be challenging Ryanair and easyJet in Europe's top-tier of low-cost carriers? Exhibit A: BA Connect Purchase. Flybe purchased BA Connect last November, and most of the BA subsidiary's 63 routes were transferred to Flybe in March. Exhibit B: New Planes. This week, Victoria Moores noted on Flightglobal.com that just last week Flybe placed an order for 15 Bombardier Q400 planes. The airline has now committed to a full 60 Q400 planes-no trifling commitment by any measure. Moore reports that the airline is set to continue their rapid-fire expansion with new routes into France, Scandinavia, and Spain. If Flybe wants to join the top leagues, they'll need to distinguish themselves from the pack. We suggest that they update their livery, or make a big deal about the routes they fly that other carriers don't touch, or begin to provide a few perks here and there-or, barring all that, consistently offer stunningly low fares. Their call, we suppose.
