The Giraffes of the Omni Centre, Edinburgh
Written by Karen Bryan
The two giraffes, made of scrap metal from motorbikes and cars by the artist, Helen Dennerly, stand proudly outside the Omni Centre. The giraffes official title is “Dreaming Spires” but they have been nicknamed Martha and Gilbert.

The sculpture was unveiled in July 2005. I have spotted them several times when driving past but never taken the time to stop and look at them. I liked this photo because you have the reflection of the older buildings opposite on modern sleek glass of the Omni Centre. It’s not very evident from the photo but you can see right down Leith Walk to the Forth Estuary and Fife when you stand in from of the giraffes.

Dear Karen: I passed the giraffes every day going to Princess Gardens and took several pictures and also wrote down the beautiful inscripton on the ground, but somehow misplaced my notes. I usually add these kind of notes below the pictures in my album. It would be a pity not to have it this time. Could you please help me out? Thank you so much for your kindness.
Hassmik – I don’t live in Edinburgh but I will see if I can pass by the giraffes to take a photo of the inscription when I’m in the city.
