Are single hotel rooms overpriced?

I was doing some research this morning for my somewhere for the weekend feature, highlighting late availability offer in the UK and looking for accommodation in Italy for a family and I couldn’t help noticing the relatively high cost of a single room in the UK and Italy. On many occasions a single room was almost the same price as a double or twin. What do you think is a fair price to pay for a single room. I think if the room is a small single room is should be half the price of a double/twin room. I know that in some hotels they have a policy of putting single guest in a double or twin room is one is available, whereas other establishments will allocate you a single room even if a larger room is empty.
