Rosslyn Chapel

I saw Rosslyn Chapel. made even more famous after filming of the Da Vinci Code, for the first time last weekend. I missed the opening hours so only saw it from the exterior. I must admit I found the external apppearance very disappointing. As I approached through Roslin Glen, I could see this structure with a steel roof in the distance. Evidently the steel roof was erected around 10 years ago to protect the building and allow it to dry out, after renovation work done in the 1950s allowed dampness to permeate the whole structure.

I’ve read that the interior of the building is amazing. It took 40 years to construct and dates from 1446. There are countless myths and legends associated with the chapel. However the publicity resulting from the Da Vinci Code has led to a five fold increase in visitors. That reminds me of the increase in visitor numbers to the Wallace Monument in Stirling, after the film Braveheart.

Have you visited Rosslyn Chapel, were you dismayed by the exterior? Also do you think that so many visitors at the chapel can detract from your enjoyment? Personally I feel that when any place gets a lot of publicity and loads of visitors it can start to spoil the visitor experience as you are jostled and compete for prime photography positions.

I read in today’s paper that the chapel is to have £7 million spent on restoration, with the possibility of a wooden roof replacing the ugly metal roof.
