Proposed speed limit on German autobahns

Written by Karen Bryan

Germany could be forced in impose speed limits on the motorways mainly due to concerns about pollution and fuel conservation. When we visited Germany a couple of years ago, I found it terrifying driving on the motorways.  It wasn’t just powerful cars driving at breakneck speed it was old bangers too!  It was great to have the hire car in Germany but you have to be so alert driving on the motorways. You check you rear mirror, see nothing and a couple of seconds later you feel something whoosh past you.

  1. While I drove comparatively slowly in Germany, I thought the driving felt very safe with people in their correct lanes and keeping the fastest lane clear for those really driving quickly. I felt much more endangered in other countries at much slower speeds but less predictable drivers, some of whom thought the horn was the main element of a vehicle.

  2. Mark – thanks for your comment. I think you are right about the lack of honking in Germany. I wonder which honking prone country(ies) you mean? Italy springs to my mind as I did remark that if I had a euro for every honk directed against me I could have paid for my trip from the honking fund.
