Virgin Fuel Saving Trial

Virgin Airlines are starting a fuel saving trial, where planes will be towed to take off areas.  This should save around two tonnes of fuel per flight and reduce CO2 emissions. Sounds to me like a very good and practical idea.  I hope that the trial is successful and these measures can be widely adopted.

Easy money with no guarantees

Easyjet have started a speedy boarding service. If you pay a fee of between £2.50 and £7.50 per person per flight you will be called for boarding first, giving you the best chance to be first on board and have the first choice of seats. However if you read the small print they say that [...]

The expanding British bottom

Evidently we Brits are getting too large to fit in economy seats. Having endured a four and half hour flight from Tenerife to the UK on a Mytravel charter flight yesterday I would definetly agree that the seats are not wide enough as well as not enough leg room. Mytravel were selling the seats with [...]

CAA to increase charges for airlines at Heathrow

The Civil Aviation Authority is to increase charges at London Heathrow. by inflation plus an additional 4 – 8% per year froom 2008 to 2013. The cumulative effect of this will be a 50% increase in charges over 5 years. I assume that this cost will be met by UK passengers, who  already be faced [...]

Too mild for snow

Many European ski resorts are only able to open their highest runs. The weather is even too mild for the artificial snow making machines to operate successfully. Is this more evidence of global waming? If you are going skiing for the festive season you will be hoping for some cold snowy weather.

Tories and Tourism

The UK Conservative party is setting up a Tourism Task Force which will investigate supporting green tourism, boosting coastal resorts and promoting family holidays. Is this just a case of jumping on the green bandwagon for political gain? Probably but I suppose that if more of we British took holidays within the UK, it could [...]

Am I on the right track?

I read that the PricewaterhouseCoopers have just publlished a report outlining the highly unpredictable nature of the travel industry in the UK. There is an increase in the variety of holidays taken and in late bookings.  Customer are taking more trips annualy and feeling more confident about booking directly with suppliers. The report concludes that [...]

Doubling of short haul Air Passenger Duty

The UK Chancellor has announced that air passenger duty for passengers departing on short haul flights from the UK will double from £5 to £10 from February 2007. Is this really to help avoid climate change or just to way to increase tax revenue? I personally don’t think that it is high enough to discourage [...]
